Who this is for: Bangladeshi patients on MED/MED X visas whose treatment requires a stay exceeding 180 days in India.

When FRRO registration is required

If your Medical visa is valid for more than 180 days (which is common for MED visas granted for transplant or multi-cycle cancer treatment), you must register with FRRO within 14 days of your date of arrival in India. This is a registration requirement for all foreign nationals staying beyond 180 days — not a penalty, just a mandatory administrative step.

e-FRRO online process

  1. Create an account at indianfrro.gov.in using your passport number and email address.
  2. Fill the registration form with your visa details, date of arrival, and address in India (use the hospital’s address or patient lodge address).
  3. Upload documents: passport bio page, visa sticker page, address proof (hospital letter or patient lodge receipt), and a recent photograph.
  4. Submit and await approval. Most registrations for medical visa holders are approved within 3–5 working days. The FRRO Registration Certificate is issued digitally.

Your hospital’s International Patient Services team can assist with the registration process — they typically have experience with this and can provide the necessary address confirmation letters.

Extension requests

If your treatment requires a stay beyond your visa expiry, apply for a visa extension through e-FRRO before the visa expires. Upload updated medical reports and a fresh letter from your treating doctor recommending the extension. Medical visa extensions are generally granted when supported by clear medical documentation. Never overstay your visa without applying for an extension first.

Hospital change endorsement

Your Medical visa is tied to the hospital named in your invitation letter. If your treating team recommends transferring to a different hospital, you need a Hospital Change endorsement from the local FRRO office before switching. This requires an application with letters from both the current and new hospitals. Apply well before the planned transfer date.

When is FRRO registration required for medical visa holders?

If your continuous stay in India exceeds 180 days. Register within 14 days of arrival (not 14 days after 180 days). Use e-FRRO at indianfrro.gov.in.
