Visa with reference, and visa without reference

The two labels the Malaysian mission uses for a visa applied for from Bangladesh, and what each one allows.

The High Commission of Malaysia in Dhaka publishes two visa categories for applicants in Bangladesh. A visa without reference (VTR) is issued and approved by the Malaysian mission abroad to enable a social visit; on arrival the visitor is given a social visit pass for a stay of not more than 30 days. The mission states that a social visit pass does not allow the visitor to undertake work, work-related training or study in Malaysia.

A visa with reference (VDR) is issued by the Malaysian mission abroad only after the application has been referred to and approved by the Immigration Department of Malaysia. The mission lists it as required for students, expatriates, dependants and professionals on a visit pass.

The mission publishes the required documents as two lists — one for a visa without reference and one for a visa with reference — rather than by profession. It does not publish a profession-by-profession document checklist, and neither does the Immigration Department of Malaysia on the pages read for this note. The mission states that all required information must be provided, that uploaded documents must meet the required specification to avoid rejection, and that it may seek additional information or request an interview at any stage of processing.

On validity the mission publishes two visa types: a single entry visa and a multiple entry visa. A single entry visa is valid for one entry and for three months from the date of issue, and becomes invalid as soon as the visitor enters Malaysia. If the visit is not made within those three months, a fresh application is needed.

For medical treatment the mission states that visitors from Bangladesh may apply for a visa without reference and submit it through the authorised official partners of the Malaysian Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC), with an appointment letter from a medical services provider registered with the MHTC, in addition to the usual documents.

An approved eVISA must be printed on A4 paper and presented at a Malaysian entry checkpoint on arrival. Visa applications for foreign workers must be submitted to the relevant visa application agencies.
