Pathways & visa routes
Maldives Immigration grants the on-arrival tourist visa to all nationalities, and a Bangladeshi passport holder sits inside that general rule: thirty days, free of charge. The stay can then be extended by a further sixty days on payment of the statutory fee. The seven routes below are the ones that meet this site's published bar — a route appears here only after its fee and its documents have been read from an official source. Two routes that exist in law are excluded because they do not meet that bar (stated at the end of this section), and there is no medical-treatment visa route for the Maldives.
- A passport or travel document with a Machine-Readable Zone (MRZ) and at least 1 month's validity. Passports carrying an extended validity are not accepted for entry.
- A complete travel itinerary: confirmed return journey tickets, a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility, and sufficient funds to cover the stay — or a sponsorship approved by Maldives Immigration.
- Meeting the entry requirements of the next destination, including any visa or passport validity requirement.
- The Traveller Declaration, submitted through IMUGA within 96 hours before arrival.
- A valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate if arriving from, or having recently travelled through, a country with a risk of yellow-fever transmission. Children under one year are exempt.
- Children and minors must hold their own passport.
Where to apply: at the port of entry — there is no pre-approval application. The only online step is the mandatory Traveller Declaration on the IMUGA portal, imuga.immigration.gov.mv/traveller.
Status: OPEN. The on-arrival tourist visa is the standing rule under the Maldives Immigration Act (Act 1/2007); the bar on Israeli passports dates from 15 April 2025 and does not affect Bangladeshi passports. Source: Department of Immigration and Emigration — immigration.gov.mv/visa/tourist-visa (page updated 10/09/2026) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visitor requirements. Claims checked 2026-09-17
Required documents: log in to IMUGA and enter the passport number, or upload the passport biodata page, and the system auto-populates the personal and accommodation records; a passport-size photograph taken within the last 12 months; the passport biodata page only in specific cases, such as a renewed passport or details that do not match existing records. Applicants who change accommodation can update the hotel details inside the application. No funds, return-ticket or insurance line is published for the extension itself, because those were checked at arrival.
Where to apply: the IMUGA portal — imuga.immigration.gov.mv (Visa section). No nationality-specific condition is published for the extension.
Status: OPEN, digitalised under the Maldives 2.0 Initiative — effective 23 April 2026. The MVR 750 figure is the Act's Annex fee, and no current official page restates it; no official page stating a different current fee was found either. - Clear colour copy of the passport biodata page; passport valid for at least 6 months.
- Recent photograph taken within the last 3 months, to Maldives Immigration photograph specifications.
- A letter stating the purpose of the visit.
- Entry and exit pages, if the applicant has travelled to the Maldives within the calendar year.
- Travel and health insurance in English, issued by a licensed company.
- The applicant must not hold a visa category specified under Article 9 of the Maldives Immigration Act and must not be prohibited from entering under Article 8.
- An invitation from a locally registered business or organisation, in accordance with the Business Visa Regulation.
Where to apply: the Business Portal of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, business.egov.mv, reached through the oneGov service catalogue at one.gov.mv/services; payment is through BandeyriPay, and Immigration then verifies the application and issues the eVisa. The application must be approved before the applicant arrives in the Maldives.
Status: OPEN, and must be approved before arrival. The current process runs under the Business Visa Regulation published 25 August 2021 (Immigration page updated 06/09/2026). Note the separate restriction effective 15 September 2026: a foreign national who enters the Maldives on a Business Visa or a Special Visa is no longer eligible to obtain a Work Permit while remaining in the Maldives. The only nationality carve-out published on the Business Visa sources is for Indian nationals in the longer-stay facility; Bangladesh is not in that carve-out. - Machine-readable passport biodata page copy of the applicant, with at least 1 year of validity.
- A valid Work Permit not exceeding 3 months from the date of arrival.
- The traveller must present the same passport named in the Work Permit.
- A Traveler Health Declaration submitted through IMUGA within 48 hours before departure from the first port of embarkation.
- A Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate, if applicable.
- For the visa application itself, submitted by the employer: the employee's passport; a copy of the Work Permit; a recent passport-size photograph to Maldives Immigration standards; a medical health screening report from a hospital or clinic authorised by the relevant government authority; and the Work Visa Application Submission Receipt (IM29).
- The current Immigration page lists: a recent photograph to Immigration photo standards; a clear colour copy of the passport biodata page; and any additional supporting documents that apply.
- Health insurance: the expatriate must be registered under the Expatriate Medical Insurance scheme before applying for the visa, and the health insurance must cover the period.
Before arrival: newly arriving expatriates must hold a valid Entry Pass issued by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology at the time of arrival, and employers are advised to obtain the Work Permit Entry Pass before the individual enters the Maldives for employment. On arrival for employment, the employer or an authorised representative must apply for and obtain the Work e-Visa within 15 days of the employee's arrival; failing that exposes the employee to penalties under the Immigration Act, including deportation.
Where to apply: the Xpat online system, xpat.egov.mv, where the employer or recruitment agency submits the application. On approval an e-Visa logo appears in the Visa section of the Xpat system. Entry Pass and Work Permit issuance sits with the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology.
Status: OPEN, with a mandatory e-Visa regime. Work visa stickers in passports ceased to be valid after 23 November 2025; only an approved e-Visa is recognised as a valid Work Visa. Separately, from 15 September 2026 a foreign national who entered the Maldives on a Business Visa or a Special Visa is not eligible to obtain a Work Permit while remaining in the country, and Xpat will not accept those applications. Salaries must be deposited into a bank account in the employee's own name at a bank registered with the Maldives Monetary Authority. No Bangladeshi exclusion from the work route is published. No nationality condition is published for either the Resident or the Corporate Resident route.
Where to apply: the oneGov portal, one.gov.mv/services, for the Corporate Resident Visa, with payment through BandeyriPay; and the IMUGA portal, imuga.immigration.gov.mv, for the marriage-based Resident Visa.
Status: OPEN. The Corporate Resident Visa operates under the Corporate Resident Visa Regulation 2021 and the Immigration resident page was updated 10/09/2026. Source: immigration.gov.mv/visa/resident and the oneGov Business Visa and Corporate Resident Visa guideline. Claims checked 2026-09-17

Meeting Visa — an on-arrival short-stay visa of 14 days, non-extendable, open since 14 May 2023, offered to any foreign national attending a meeting, conference or convention. Its prerequisites are published, but no official fee is published on the Immigration Meeting Visa page or on the Foreign Ministry's visa page, so the route does not meet the bar this site applies. Student Visa — a fee of MVR 300 for every three months or part appears in the Act's Annex, but no official document list, maximum stay, entry rule or processing time is published: the Immigration student-visa URLs and the retired site page return 404 and the route is absent from the official sitemap. Both routes are left out of the blocks above rather than completed from unofficial sources.
There is no medical-treatment visa route for the Maldives. Maldives Immigration publishes no medical visa page, and the official sitemap lists only the tourist, work, business, dependent, marriage, meeting, resident and sponsorship-declaration visas; the Foreign Ministry's visitor pages cover the same set with no medical visa. Medical situations are handled under the Act's Special Visa, section 17(b), which covers a foreign national who was under medical treatment when the original visa expired and needs to continue that treatment. A Bangladeshi travelling to the Maldives for treatment therefore arrives on the tourist visa on arrival and, where treatment must continue beyond the permit, relies on the Special Visa mechanism — not on a dedicated medical visa. No operational Special Visa page (documents, fee, processing time) was found on the current Immigration site; the published elements are the Act's definition and the Annex fee of MVR 750 for every three months. Medical and travel insurance is mandatory for the work, business, student and dependent categories, but that is a health-insurance condition attached to those visas, not a medical-treatment visa.
Every traveller, including children and minors, must submit an individual Traveller Declaration. Maldives Immigration states that there are no fees for submitting the form, and warns travellers to use the IMUGA portal and avoid other websites. Because it is an entry requirement rather than a visa, it is not counted among the routes above. Frequently asked questions
How long can a Bangladeshi passport holder stay in the Maldives without paying a fee?
Thirty days from the date of entry, free of charge. The Maldives Immigration Act provides that a visitor may remain for a period not exceeding 30 days from the date of entry without the payment of any fees. The stay can then be extended by a further sixty days on payment of the statutory fee. No official Maldives source grants Bangladeshi passport holders a longer free stay.
Is the on-arrival tourist visa single entry or multiple entry?
Single entry. Section 19 of the Immigration Act gives the Controller discretion to grant a multiple-entry permit for other visa categories but expressly excludes the tourist visa from that discretion.
How long does the tourist visa take to process?
No official processing time is stated. Entry is granted at the port of entry after the immigration officer determines admissibility under sections 7 and 8 of the Immigration Act, and there is no pre-approval application to process.
Is there a medical-treatment visa for the Maldives?
No — there is no medical-treatment visa route. Medical situations are handled under the Special Visa in section 17(b) of the Immigration Act, which covers a foreign national who was under medical treatment when the original visa expired and needs to continue that treatment. A patient travelling from Bangladesh arrives on the tourist visa on arrival and, if treatment must continue past the permit, relies on the Special Visa mechanism.
Do I have to submit anything online before I fly?
Yes — the Traveller Declaration, through IMUGA, within 96 hours before the flight time for arrival. It is free, and every traveller including children and minors submits an individual declaration. Maldives Immigration warns that other websites charge for this form; the official form does not.
Do children need their own passport?
Yes. Children and minors must hold their own passport to enter the Maldives.
Do I need a yellow fever vaccination certificate?
It depends on the routing. A valid certificate is required if you arrive from, or have recently travelled through, a country with a risk of yellow-fever transmission, and children under one year are exempt. Because the rule turns on the route travelled, there is no single answer for Bangladeshi travellers as a class.
How much is the work-permit security deposit for a Bangladeshi worker?
MVR 8,000. The deposit rates are published by nationality, and Bangladesh (ISO BGD) is listed at MVR 8,000. The published rates are stated to be subject to change without notice.
Can I enter on a Business Visa and then take up employment in the Maldives?
No. From 15 September 2026, foreign nationals who enter the Maldives on a Business Visa or a Special Visa are not eligible to obtain a Work Permit while remaining in the country, and Work Permit applications submitted through Xpat for those individuals are not accepted.
Is the work visa still a sticker in the passport?
No. Work visa stickers in passports ceased to be valid after 23 November 2025. Only an approved e-Visa is recognised as a valid Work Visa, and it is obtained through the Xpat system by the employer within 15 days of the employee's arrival on a valid Entry Pass.
How long does an extension of a tourist stay take?
48 hours, as officially stated, and it is applied for online through IMUGA. The digitalised extension process took effect on 23 April 2026 under the Maldives 2.0 Initiative.
Is travel or health insurance required?
It depends on the route. No insurance requirement is stated for the tourist visa on arrival. Travel and health insurance in English from a licensed company is required for the Business Visa and the Corporate Resident Visa; expatriate medical insurance is required for the Work Visa and the Dependent Visa; and health insurance is required when applying for a new Marriage Visa.

Official inconsistencies, and what could not be verified
These are findings, not gaps to be filled from unofficial sources. Where two official sources disagree, both positions are reported and neither is resolved in favour of the other.
Official sources that disagree
- Business Visa maximum stay: Maldives Immigration publishes a cumulative stay of three months within a 12-month period; the oneGov guideline publishes up to six months within a 12-month period.
- Work-permit fee: MIRA publishes MVR 350 per month; the Act's Annex prints MVR 250 per month.
- Declaration window: the Traveller Declaration is submitted within 96 hours before arrival, while a Traveler Health Declaration is listed for the work-visa arrival flow within 48 hours before departure from the first port of embarkation.
- Dependent Visa fee wording: the Immigration page gives a flat MVR 750; the Foreign Ministry page gives MVR 750 for each 3 months plus an MVR 50 card fee.
- Tourist extension fee: the Act's Annex sets MVR 750 and no current official page restates it.
- Work-visa processing figures: the current Immigration page states none, while the Foreign Ministry page still prints 48 hours and, separately, 3 working days from earlier arrangements.
Not verified — stated as unconfirmed
- The Meeting Visa fee — not published on any official source checked. The route is therefore not published above.
- The Student Visa document list, maximum stay, entry rule and processing time — no official Immigration page exists. The route is therefore not published above.
- Whether a Maldives–Bangladesh bilateral instrument changes the fee or the free-stay length for ordinary passports. Section 34(b) of the Act permits such agreements; no instrument was retrieved from an official Maldives source.
- Whether the MVR 750 tourist-extension fee is still the operative fee.
- A daily funds amount for tourists — the numeric figure published on a Maldives mission page is mission-level guidance and does not appear on the Immigration requirements list, so no amount is published here.
- The operational rules of the Special Visa (documents, fee, processing time and portal) — only the Act's definition and the Annex fee were found.
- The Resident Visa fee, validity term and entry rule for marriage-based applicants — not published.
- The number of entries for the Dependent, Marriage, Resident and Meeting visas — not published.
- Work-visa fingerprint or biometric timing — Xpat publishes biometric guidance, but no statement of the rule was read.
- Per-category fee tables inside the signed-in IMUGA visa area — the area is behind sign-in and was not read; no third-party figure has been substituted.
- Whether the free on-arrival stay length can be changed for a nationality by agreement — the mechanism exists in the Act, and no official source applying a change to Bangladeshi passports was found.
