TREATMENT / ABROAD GUIDE BD
A spinal fusion joins two or more vertebrae so that they move as one, using bone graft, a cage, or screws and rods. This page explains what the operation involves, which destinations publish a price for it, which hospitals in our directory list spine work, how recovery usually runs, and what can go wrong.

The spine is a stack of bones separated by discs. When a disc or a joint between two vertebrae presses on a nerve, or when the column itself has become unstable, a surgeon may join those vertebrae so they can no longer move against each other. The joined segment is called a fusion.
Bone graft is placed between the vertebrae and held there while it consolidates, usually with screws and rods passed through the pedicles, or around a cage inserted into the disc space. Some operations approach the spine through the back, others through the front of the abdomen or the side of the body, and the approach decides much of the recovery.
A one-level fusion joins two vertebrae; a two-level fusion joins three. The Thai package below prices a single-level lumbar fusion with O-arm navigation, and the Turkish guide range is written for one to two levels, so multi-level work sits above both.
Fusion and decompression are not the same operation, and one cannot be used as a price for the other. Bangkok Hospital publishes decompression prices on the same page as its fusion package: THB 402,000 for endoscopic spine surgery, THB 432,000 for a microscopic laminectomy without fusion, and THB 374,000 for a discectomy.
Operating time, blood loss and length of stay all rise with the number of levels fused. The Thai fusion packages are built on three, four or five nights depending on the level count.
A fusion is considered when a segment of the spine is unstable, or when pressure on a nerve has not settled with other treatment. The pattern surgeons describe looks like this:
Fusion is not the first answer to ordinary back pain. A surgeon will usually want imaging, and often a trial of non-surgical treatment, before considering it.
These are the published figures in our cost file, in the currency each provider prints them in. The Thai row excludes the implant by the package’s own name, and the Turkish band covers one or two levels only.

Singapore’s figures are bills that were actually charged in 2023, not quotes. The conversions use the rate printed beside each figure in our cost file and ignore card and transfer margin. Where a cell reads quoted per case, no provider publishes a figure and the only number worth having is a written quote from the hospital itself.
Only four of the 87 hospitals in our directory list a spine service at all. Two of the three named below carry a verified JCI record at the date we checked. Doctors Hospital Lahore holds an unverified accreditation claim; the fourth hospital in our file with a spine service, Kauvery Alwarpet, is JCI-verified.

Recovery from a fusion is slower than from a decompression alone, and the treating team sets the pace. What patients commonly meet:
Long-haul flying after a fusion is a clinical decision rather than an itinerary one. The airline and the surgeon each set conditions, and the treating team should confirm the date in writing before a return ticket is booked.
Any operation carries risk. The list below covers what spine surgeons routinely discuss with patients. The treating hospital will give its own version, and the numbers it quotes for its own unit are the ones that matter.
The risks specific to fusion include infection in the wound or around the screws, a tear of the membrane around the spinal cord that leaks fluid, nerve injury that can leave weakness or numbness, blood clots in the leg or the lung, failure of the bone to join, loosening or breakage of the metalwork, and degeneration of the segment immediately above the fusion in later years. What the guidance actually says. UK guidance is unusually direct: do not offer spinal fusion for non-specific low back pain outside a clinical trial (NICE NG59, recommendation 1.3.9, checked 22 October 2026). That is a narrower indication than most clinic pages imply, and it is why the question to ask is which diagnosis the fusion is for, not which technique. The number that does not exist. We looked for a published solid-fusion rate in the UK and Australian joint registries, the Swedish spine register and the national GIRFT review. None of them publishes one. The "90–95% fusion rate" quoted widely has no registry behind it, so we do not print it. Ask the hospital for its own figure, and for the imaging that shows fusion in its own patients rather than a percentage on a slide.
The general risks are those of any operation under anaesthetic, together with the larger blood loss that comes with a longer construct. Some fusions are done with blood ordered in advance for that reason.
Some of these turn into money. Complications, intensive care beyond the package, the implant itself on the Thai package, and any second operation all fall outside the published prices above. The Singapore figures are bill data rather than packages, so they reflect what patients were charged, complications included.
Is the implant included in the Thai fusion price?
No. Bangkok International’s package is named as implant-excluded, and it also excludes the specialist consultant fee, pre-operative internal medicine clearance, intensive care beyond the package, pathology and home medication. The metalwork is priced on top.
What is the difference between one level and two?
A one-level fusion joins two vertebrae and a two-level fusion joins three. The Thai figure is for one level. The Turkish range is written for one or two levels, so a three-level fusion falls outside both and needs its own quote.
Does a fusion mean I lose movement in my back?
The fused segment stops moving; the segments above and below take on more of the movement. How much that matters depends on which level is fused and on the rest of the spine, which is a conversation for the surgeon holding your imaging.
Why is there no price for India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka or Bangladesh?
Because none of those destinations published a fusion figure we could verify. No Indian, Malaysian, Sri Lankan or Bangladeshi provider prints one in the pages we read. Those rows read quoted per case for that reason, not because the operation is unavailable there.
Is keyhole spine surgery cheaper?
It is a different operation, not a cheaper version of the same one. The decompression prices on the Bangkok page range from THB 374,000 to THB 432,000, and they do not include a fusion. Ask which procedure is being quoted before comparing any two numbers.
What does quoted per case mean?
It means the hospital prices each patient individually after seeing imaging and a medical history. The figure arrives as a written quote, and that quote is the only number worth setting beside the published packages above.
Send your imaging and history, tell us which destinations you are considering, and we will ask the hospitals you choose for a written price in the currency you will actually pay.
