Italy for Bangladeshi Citizens (2026)

Guidance and resources for Bangladeshi readers.

At a glance

Where should a Bangladeshi applicant start?

Start with the visa purpose and the destination requirements in this guide, then use the linked official sources to confirm the current rules before you pay or apply. Read the pathways, the fee, the documents and the application details in order, then confirm your next step against the official source.

Figures, requirements, dates and service claims retain the source’s editorial status; they have not been independently verified.

Every figure on this page was read from an official Italian source — the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka (ambdhaka.esteri.it), the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa pages (esteri.it and vistoperitalia.esteri.it), the Gazzetta Ufficiale, the Ministry of the Interior and its Prefetture, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies, the EU Immigration Portal and the EU's harmonised Bangladesh list — together with the published checklists of the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka. Where a figure comes from VFS Global it is labelled as the designated visa application operator for Italy in Bangladesh, which is not a government body. No blog, agent page or third-party visa service was the source of any figure. Claims checked 2026-09-17

Pathways & visa routes

20 verified routes · Fees: €90 / €45 / €116 / €50, paid in cash in BDT · Claims checked 2026-09-17

Italy's short-stay route is the uniform Schengen visa — Type C — not an Italy-only instrument. What is Italy-specific for a Bangladeshi applicant is the Dhaka document checklist, the fee collected in cash in Bangladeshi taka, the VFS appointment regime and the apostille rules. A Bangladeshi applying for Italy is applying for a Schengen visa at the Italian mission. The competent authority is the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka — a single mission, not a separate consulate — and it is competent for both short-stay Type C and long-stay Type D visas for residents of Bangladesh. Filing runs through VFS Global, the designated visa application operator and the only filing channel; applications are not lodged at the Embassy counter. The twenty routes below are the routes for which the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka publishes a dedicated, Bangladesh-specific checklist on its official "choose the correct visa" page, last updated 14/09/2026. Two further purposes are documented but excluded from the twenty and are named at the end of this section.

The Decreto Flussi, stated correctly

The Decreto Flussi is the single most mis-reported item on this route, so the verified position is set out plainly.

  • Bangladesh is named in the decree — but has no quota of its own. The D.P.C.M. of 2 October 2025, published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale no. 240 of 15 October 2025 (code 25A05656), names Bangladesh in Article 6(2)(a) among 38 countries whose non-seasonal subordinate workers may enter under specific migration-cooperation agreements. Those 38 countries share a single reserve of 25,000 places a year. There is no Bangladesh-only quota, and the decree publishes no Bangladesh-only sub-quota.
  • The claim of an annual 25,000-visa allocation for Bangladesh is not supported. Some third-party pages attribute a reserve of that size to Bangladesh alone. The official decree does not allocate the reserve by country, so that figure cannot be sourced to it. This page states the correction rather than repeating the number.
  • The window. The click day for the Bangladesh-eligible non-seasonal work category was 16 February 2026 and has passed. The Prefettura states that requests may be filed until 31 December 2026, subject to verification of quota availability. Whether quota remained available as at 17 September 2026 is not published in the sources checked — reported as unpublished, not predicted.
  • The Bangladesh-specific condition. Release of the Nulla Osta for workers coming from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Morocco is always subject to the favourable opinion of the competent Questura, as well as preliminary verification by the Ispettorato Nazionale del Lavoro (INL), in collaboration with the Agenzia delle Entrate and AGEA for the agricultural sector.
  • The programme as a whole. 497,550 places over the triennium 2026-2028: 164,850 in 2026, 165,850 in 2027 and 166,850 in 2028. For 2026 the decree sets 76,850 places for non-seasonal subordinate work and self-employment, 13,600 for domestic and family care, and 18,000 for countries signing agreements during the triennium.
  • The fee. €116 — the general national Type D tariff. There is no quota-specific fee line on the Dhaka fee page. The employer, not the worker, files the request for the Nulla Osta.
  • Bilateral basis. A Memorandum of Intesa (2025) between the Italian MFA, Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Interior and the Bangladesh MFA, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, in the field of migration and mobility, is in force.

Documented purposes excluded from the count of twenty

Two purposes are documented officially but are not counted among the twenty routes above, because they do not meet this site's published bar — a route appears here only after its fee and its documents have been read from a Bangladesh-specific official source.

  • Airport transit — Type A. Documented in the EU's harmonised Bangladesh list. It permits no entry into the Schengen area and cannot be requested directly by the applicant. The EU harmonised list requires a valid visa for the next or final destination country plus a copy of the continuation ticket or reservation.
  • Elective residence — Type D. Listed as an official purpose on the Italian MFA visa portal, but no Bangladesh-specific checklist is published by the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka, and no Bangladeshi financial threshold is published. The route therefore cannot be documented to this site's standard, and no requirement figure for it is printed on this page. A Bangladeshi applicant must ask the Dhaka mission directly.

If both excluded purposes were counted as well, the number would be 22. This page documents 20.

Visa fees

The Italian Embassy in Dhaka publishes these amounts for applicants in Bangladesh, and the fee is payable in cash in local currency rather than in euro. There is no separate per-nationality amount.

Italy visa fees published for applicants in Bangladesh
CategoryFee
Schengen Visa (Type C), adults€90
Schengen Visa (Type C), children aged 6 to 12€45
National Visa (Type D)€116
National Visa for study purposes (Type D)€50

The €90 Schengen amount is the EU-wide figure that took effect on 11 June 2024, replacing the previous €80. Children under 6 are exempt, and appointments themselves are free of charge.

Applications are submitted through the VFS Global Italy Visa Application Centre in Dhaka, where the fee is paid in cash. VFS charges its own service fee separately; that amount is not published on a readable official page, so no figure is given here.

Source: Ambasciata d'Italia, Dhaka, cost of a visa and how to pay, last updated 30 June 2026. The €80 to €90 change is recorded in EU Commission OJ L_202401415, and was notified for Bangladesh through the VFS notice of 4 June 2024.

Required documents

The lists below are reproduced from the official source named for each route — the published checklists of the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka, the EU's harmonised Bangladesh list, and the fee and rule pages of the Italian mission. They are the published lists item by item, not summaries. Where an official source marks an item as conditional, that is stated. Items listed as "required" are required by that source for that route; items listed as "conditional" apply only where the stated condition is met. Every checklist states that the Embassy reserves the right to request supplementary documents not listed, and that the same applicant cannot submit more than one visa application at the same time even with two different passports.

Authority & application channels

This is the part most often reported wrongly. Italy's short-stay route is the uniform Schengen visa — Type C — which is a common Schengen instrument and not an Italy-only invention. What is Italy-specific for a Bangladeshi applicant is the Bangladesh checklist, the fee paid in cash in Bangladeshi taka, the VFS appointment regime and the apostille rules.

  • Competent authority — Embassy of Italy in Dhaka. A single mission, not a separate consulate. It is competent for both short-stay Type C (including the uniform Schengen visa) and long-stay Type D national visas for residents of Bangladesh. It also represents Malta and Slovakia, but solely for Schengen Type C applications. ambdhaka.esteri.it
  • Application channel — VFS Global is the designated visa application operator and the only filing channel. In the mission's own words: "Visas for Italy can only be requested at the VFS Agency, Italy Visa and Legalization Application Centre." Applications are lodged at VFS centres, not at the Embassy counter. VFS Global is a private operator designated for this purpose; it is not the government and not the authority that decides the visa — the decision rests with the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka. Operator portal: visa.vfsglobal.com/bgd/en/ita
  • VFS centres in Bangladesh. Dhaka — Nafi Tower (4th and 5th Floor), 53 South Gulshan Avenue, Gulshan 1, Dhaka 1212. Chattogram — World Trade Center Chittagong (5th Floor), 102/103 Agrabad C/A, Commerce College Road, Chittagong 4100. Sylhet — Visa and Legalization Application Centre, 4th Floor, Nirvana Inn Complex, Ramer Dighir Par, Mirzajungle Road, Sylhet 3100.
  • Decreto Flussi filing route. Holders of a valid Nulla Osta issued after 22 October 2024 start the process through a VFS webform portal: vfseu.mioot.com/forms/ITABDE
  • Appointment regime — Bangladesh-specific. Appointment slots are released in monthly batches. For September 2026 the family reunion and tourist categories opened on 26 August 2026 at 10:00 AM, booked directly and free of charge through the VFS login "without the need for any third-party assistance". A maximum of 10 appointment slots per day is allocated for tourist visa applications. From February 2026 a dedicated walk-in channel exists for frequent travellers: applicants with at least three Schengen visas issued within the last four years, correctly used with no overstay, may submit tourist applications without an appointment, subject to VFS verification.
  • Student appointments. Students who registered regularly on the UNIVERSITALY portal are contacted by email by VFS Global to set up the appointment, at the same email address used for registration on Universitaly.
  • Family reunion appointments. Family reunion applicants may submit without an appointment on 6 and 27 September 2026 at the Dhaka centre between 09:00 and 10:30, where the Nulla Osta is set to expire within 30 days or the applicant is a minor whose parent holds a valid family reunion visa. The Nulla Osta is treated as valid for six months from issuance; exceptions require the Embassy's approval.
  • L/N Nulla Osta submissions. Applicants holding a Nulla Osta issued under the L/N work category are not required to book an online appointment. They may attend the Visa Application Centre on a walk-in basis with a hard copy of the approved Nulla Osta and a copy of the passport bio-data page; the documents are forwarded to the Embassy for verification, and once the Nulla Osta is validated the applicant receives an email confirming the date and time for submission of the visa application.
  • Biometrics. Taken in person at the mission, under articles 13 and 47 of the Visa Code.
  • Fee payment. For all visas the payment is processed in cash in local currency (BDT). The Dhaka fee page publishes only four tariffs — €90 for the Type C adult rate, €45 for children aged 6 to 12, €116 for the general national Type D rate, and €50 for national study visas. It does not publish an exemption list, and this page therefore does not reproduce one.
  • Apostille. Bangladeshi civil-status documents must be apostilled by the MoFA of Bangladesh, and only one apostille is accepted per document. The apostille requirement, the 6-month or 12-month Bangladeshi bank statements and the residence-permit condition for non-Bangladeshi applicants are the requirements the EU's harmonised Bangladesh list adds for Bangladesh specifically.
  • Contacts. Embassy visa office visti.dhaka@esteri.it; commercial correspondence for business applications dhaka.commerciale@esteri.it; VFS helpline info.itbd@vfshelpline.com, +880 9606777666 and +880 966611384.
  • Entry/Exit System (EES). The Italian MFA portal states the biometric Entry/Exit System became operational on 12 October 2025. No Bangladesh-specific operational guidance was found.

Frequently asked questions

Is Italy's short-stay visa a Schengen visa, or is it something Italy-specific?

It is the uniform Schengen visa — Type C. Italy did not create a separate short-stay instrument, and the 90-days-in-any-180-day ceiling, the one-two-or-multiple entries rule and the Article 23 processing framework are Schengen rules.

Where does a Bangladeshi applicant file an Italian visa application?

At VFS Global, which is the designated visa application operator and the only filing channel — the mission states that "visas for Italy can only be requested at the VFS Agency, Italy Visa and Legalization Application Centre". Applications are lodged at the VFS centres in Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet, not at the Embassy counter. The Embassy of Italy in Dhaka is the competent authority and takes the decision. VFS Global is a private operator designated for this purpose; it is not the government.

How much does an Italian visa cost at Dhaka, and how is it paid?

The Dhaka mission publishes four tariffs. €90 for the Type C adult rate; €45 for children aged 6 to 12; €116 for the general national Type D rate; and €50 for national study visas, which is a reduced rate against the general Type D tariff. For all visas the payment is processed in cash in local currency (BDT). The mission publishes only those four figures and does not publish an exemption list, so this page does not reproduce one. Any VFS service charge could not be verified, because the VFS fee pages render only a loading screen.

Is there a medical-treatment visa for Italy?

Yes. The Embassy of Italy in Dhaka publishes a dedicated medical treatment (cure mediche) checklist, and the EU's harmonised Bangladesh list also covers medical treatment. It is a Type C route at the €90 adult tariff, issued for patients and eventual accompanying persons. It is not a free route, and it requires, among other things, an Italian facility's declaration of the treatment and its cost, and evidence that at least 30% of the estimated cost has been deposited, or a Regional act or a Ministry of Health humanitarian authorisation.

Does Bangladesh have its own annual quota under the Decreto Flussi?

No. Bangladesh is named in the decree — D.P.C.M. Article 6(2)(a) — but it is one of 38 countries that share a single reserve of 25,000 places a year for non-seasonal subordinate workers. There is no Bangladesh-only quota, and the decree publishes no Bangladesh-only sub-quota. The claim that Bangladesh has an annual allocation of 25,000 work visas is not supported by the official decree, and this page states that correction rather than repeating the figure.

Can a Bangladeshi worker still apply under the 2026 Decreto Flussi?

The click day for the Bangladesh-eligible non-seasonal work category was 16 February 2026 and has passed. The Prefettura states that requests may be filed until 31 December 2026, subject to verification of quota availability. Whether quota remained available as at 17 September 2026 is not published in the sources checked, and this page does not predict it. Also note that the employer — not the worker — files the request for the Nulla Osta.

How long does an Italian visa application take?

No route-specific processing time is published on any Bangladesh checklist, so for most routes this page states that no official processing time is stated. Two officially published terms exist and both are labelled as what they are: the Schengen framework maximum of 15 days extendable to 45 under Article 23 of the Visa Code, and the MFA's national-visa framework terms of 90 days generally, 30 days for employment, 30 days for family reunification and 120 days for self-employment. These are statutory framework terms, not turnarounds. One Bangladesh-specific addition is officially stated: after approval, the visa may take up to 10 additional days to be issued, because final authorisation must be obtained through the Schengen Visa System.

Do I need an appointment to submit the application?

Usually yes. Slots are released in monthly batches through the VFS login and are free of charge. A maximum of 10 appointment slots per day is allocated for tourist visa applications. Since February 2026 there is a walk-in channel for frequent travellers who hold at least three Schengen visas issued in the last four years, correctly used with no overstay. Students are contacted by email after registering on UNIVERSITALY. Family reunion applicants have specified walk-in dates, and L/N Nulla Osta holders may submit on a walk-in basis without an online appointment.

Why is the study visa fee lower than other long-stay visas?

Because the Dhaka mission publishes a reduced national rate for study. National study visas are €50, against the general national Type D tariff of €116. The reduced study rate applies to university pre-enrolment, post-graduate and single-course study, internships and vocational training.

What makes a Bangladeshi application different from a generic Schengen application?

Three published requirements are added for Bangladesh specifically: the personal bank statement covering the last 6 months for short-stay routes and 12 months for some study routes, issued by a bank operating in Bangladesh; the apostille of civil-status documents by the MoFA of Bangladesh, with only one apostille accepted per document; and a valid Bangladeshi Residence Permit for applicants who are not Bangladeshi nationals. The VFS appointment regime and the cash-in-BDT payment are also Bangladesh-specific in practice.

Is VFS Global the government?

No. VFS Global is the designated visa application operator for Italy in Bangladesh — the only channel through which applications are lodged — but it is a private operator, not a government body and not the authority that decides the visa. The competent authority is the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka, and the decision on the application is the Embassy's. The mission also states that appointments are booked directly and free of charge, "without the need for any third-party assistance".

Which Italian visa applies to a family member of an EU citizen?

Two separate routes exist. For a short stay, there is the EU tourism checklist under Article 2 of Legislative Decree 30/2007 — a Type C route at the €90 adult tariff, for a spouse or registered partner, direct descendants under 21 or dependent, and dependent direct ascendants. For a long stay, there is the family reunification with an EU citizen route under the same Article 2, which is a Type D route at €116. Family members outside those categories use the regular tourism checklist under Article 3 of the same decree.

Is there an airport transit visa for Italy, and does it allow me to enter?

There is an airport transit visa, Type A, and it is documented in the EU's harmonised Bangladesh list. It permits no entry into the Schengen area and cannot be requested directly by the applicant. It is listed on this page for completeness but is excluded from the count of twenty routes, because it does not permit entry and is not a route in the sense used here.

Can I get a long-stay visa for Italy to live there without working?

Elective residence (Type D) is listed as an official purpose on the Italian MFA visa portal, so the purpose exists. However, the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka publishes no Bangladesh-specific checklist for it and no Bangladeshi financial threshold, so it cannot be documented to this site's standard. It is excluded from the count of twenty, and no requirement figure for it is printed on this page. A Bangladeshi applicant should ask the Dhaka mission directly. Requirement figures published by Italian missions in other countries are for their own jurisdiction and are not the Bangladesh requirement.

Official inconsistencies, and what could not be verified

Where an official source is silent, gated, or contradicts another official source, that is recorded here rather than filled in with a figure from elsewhere. A gap is reported as a gap.

  • Fee-exemption categories are not published for the Bangladesh mission. The Dhaka fee page lists only the four tariffs — Type C adult €90, children 6 to 12 €45, national Type D €116 and study €50. It does not publish the exemption or reduced categories that exist elsewhere in the EU Visa Code framework. This page therefore prints no exemption list.
  • No official fee exists for the Decreto Flussi visa beyond the general €116. The Dhaka fee page has one national Type D line and no quota-specific line. Any "Flows Decree visa fee" figure circulating elsewhere is not from an official Bangladeshi source.
  • No Bangladesh-specific quota number exists in the official decree. The D.P.C.M. publishes a single shared reserve of 25,000 places a year across 38 countries, naming Bangladesh among them. Any per-country Bangladesh number is unsupported by the decree.
  • Remaining quota after the 16 February 2026 click day is unpublished. The Prefettura states only that requests may be filed until 31 December 2026 subject to verification of quota availability. Whether quota remained available as at 17 September 2026 could not be verified.
  • The Italian MFA visa database is JavaScript and login gated. The guided selector on vistoperitalia.esteri.it — nationality, country of residence, length of stay and reason for stay — renders client-side, and the per-route detail pages could not be read. The portal returned HTTP 404 for /home/en and /home/en/visa-database. Only route names were readable from the public landing page. Recorded as unverified rather than substituted.
  • VFS Global Bangladesh fee and visa-type pages are JavaScript-rendered. The visa-fees and visa-types pages returned only a loading state with no extractable content, so the VFS service charge, if any, could not be verified from the designated operator's own site. No third-party figure is substituted here.
  • Elective residence — no Bangladesh-specific requirements are published. There is no Dhaka checklist and no published Bangladeshi income threshold. Official figures published by Italian consulates elsewhere are issued for their own jurisdiction and are not the Bangladesh requirement, so no such figure is printed on this page.
  • The EU Blue Card salary threshold could not be verified for 2026. The figure published on the EU Immigration Portal is dated 2024 and the page itself is dated 1 April 2025; its 2026 value is unverified, so no threshold figure is printed on this page and the route is flagged as potentially stale.
  • The Blue Card's exemption from the Decreto Flussi quota is unverified. That claim was found only in third-party sources; the official EU and Italian pages checked do not state it.
  • Blue Card versus L/N art. 27 naming. The Dhaka checklist is titled "Qualified Work VISA L/N ART 27" and states the visa is reserved for highly qualified workers, while the EU Blue Card in Italian law sits in art. 27-quater. Whether the Dhaka checklist and the EU Blue Card are the same instrument is not stated on the checklist, so the equation is treated cautiously here.
  • The Embassy's opening hours conflict between two official Dhaka pages. The consular-services page gives translations and legalisations as Sunday to Thursday 14:00 to 16:00; the "where to apply" page gives 11:00 to 12:30, and contains a literal typographical error reading "16:00 to %:00 PM". Reported, not resolved.
  • The Work L/N art. 23 checklist is internally inconsistent. The document title reads "L/N ART 22/23" while the Bengali heading on the same file says "L/N ART 27". Reported, not resolved.
  • Processing times exist at framework level only. No route-specific processing time is published on any Bangladesh checklist. The MFA figures — 15 days extendable to 45 for Schengen, 90 days for national visas, 30 days for employment, 30 days for family reunification and 120 days for self-employment — are statutory maximum or framework terms, not turnarounds, and are labelled as framework throughout this page.
  • Self-employment sub-types have no Bangladesh checklist. The MFA selector lists business owner, freelance, sports activity and start-up as separate self-employment purposes; the Dhaka checklist covers consultants and corporate roles of pre-existing companies only.
  • "Study – Apprenticeship" and "Working Holiday" have no Bangladesh checklist. Both appear in the MFA route selector. Whether Bangladeshi nationals are eligible for an Italian Working Holiday visa is not documented in the sources checked.
  • The Entry/Exit System has no Bangladesh-specific guidance. The MFA portal states the biometric EES became operational on 12 October 2025, but its practical effect on Bangladeshi applicants at Schengen borders is described only generically in the sources checked.
  • The insurance minimum varies by route. €30,000 is stated on Type C routes and most study variants, while the university pre-enrolment study checklist states no €30,000 figure. Reported per route above rather than generalised.
